Building Your Life On The Rock

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. “ (Matthew 7:24 NIV)

We all want God to bless our lives. For God to do that, we need to get into his Word.  Over the last few days, we’ve been looking at the four ways James 1:22-25 says we should interact with the Bible in order to have a life God blesses.

  • Read your Bible. “Whoever looks intently …”
  • Review the Bible. “… and continues in it …”
  • Remember the Bible. “… not forgetting what they have heard …”
  • Respond to the Bible. “ … but doing it …”

If you read, study, and memorize God’s Word, but you never apply the Bible to your life, you’ve missed the point. James 1:22 warns us not to deceive ourselves when we read God’s Word. Instead, we’re to turn what God teaches us into actions.

You only believe the part of the Bible you actually do. If I shared with you biblical principles about balancing your family budget, but you never do it, you’re simply deceiving yourself. You don’t really know what the Bible is teaching.

In almost every message I share at Saddleback Church, every point has a verb in it. Why? God wants us to be doers of the Word not just hearers. Too many times we hear good Bible teaching, but we don’t know what to do about what we’re learning.

Jesus says in Matthew 7:24, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (NIV).Applying the Bible to your life will give your life stability during the storms of life.

We don’t know which storms will come into our lives in the next year or two. But I do know this: You’ll crumble when tough times come if you’re building your life on anything other than God’s Word. Contemporary culture changes like shifting sands. 

Instead, you must build your life upon applying the unchanging Word of God. No storm can overcome that rock.

  • What storm are you facing right now? Are you trusting God for his provision and searching God’s Word for his guidance?
  • What Scripture did you read in your quiet time today? How will you do what it says this day?
