Does What You Value Have Eternal Value?

Jesus said, “Watch out and guard yourselves from every kind of greed; because your true life is not made up of the things you own, no matter how rich you may be.” Luke 12:15 (GN)

The intruder was in her den when she walked in. She didn’t see him at first, but she could sense something wasn’t right.

And then he ran to attack her. Struggling on the floor, she reached for anything to defend herself and grabbed some scissors she had in a basket full of coupons.

Fearing for her life, she swung the scissors down as hard as she could and killed the man.

I thought, “Wow, this is a pretty intense TV episode.”

The reason I’ve told you about it, though, is because of what the homeowner said when the police arrived. They were trying to figure out what the intruder was after and so one detective asked the woman, “Do you have anything of value in your house?”

What would be your response? Some jewelry? A plasma-screen TV? Your new computer? An irreplaceable family heirloom?

You know what the woman said when asked if there was anything of value in her house?

“Yes, my nine year-old daughter.”

As Pastor Rick taught this week, God wants us to focus on things that have eternal value. The people in your life have eternal value. The things you own do not.

As you think about the eternal value of everyone in your family and each one of your friends, will you change the way to relate to any of them? How about your annoying neighbor or insensitive co-worker? Will knowing their eternal value change the way you relate to them?
