Three Attitudes Toward Your Neighbor - #3: Love Them
By Rick Warren

“But a Samaritan who was traveling that way came upon the man, and when he saw him, his heart was filled with pity.” (Luke 10:33 TEV)
As we’ve been learning, Jesus wants us to love our neighbors in the same way we love ourselves.
He says there are three attitudes we can develop toward our neighbors. We can keep our distance, or we can become curious, yet remain uninvolved.
The third attitude is that we love others as we love ourselves, treating them in the same way we want to be treated by others.
This is the response of the Good Samaritan. He “came upon the man, and when he saw him, his heart was filled with pity” (Luke 10:33 TEV).
How can I love others as I love myself? “Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them” (Matthew 7:12a MSG).
Lord, only you can make the change in me that will allow me to love my neighbors in the same way I love myself. I’m coming to you because I realize that only you can fill me with your self-less love.
I pray that you’ll help me develop a heart for those around me and then give me the courage to do something about it. Father, do in me what I can’t do myself. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
